Rewards & benefits

Extra-special job satisfaction is just one thing that makes us a more rewarding place to work. We look after the people who look after our business in all sorts of ways – including recognising individual effort with a well-deserved ‘thank you’.

When people join us, they tend to stay. Over two-thirds have worked with us for over five years.

An accredited 'Investor in People' for the fourth time running – and one of only 36 companies to be awarded 'Investor in People Champion' – we are proud to offer some of the best packages around. As well as competitive pay and a generous contributory pension scheme, they include a wide range of other benefits, award-winning training and high-quality working environments.

Our PRIDE values give us another reason to reward people. Go the extra mile to help us deliver the PRIDE promise – Putting customers first, Rising to the challenge, Inspiring confidence, Delivering best value and Exceeding expectations – and you can expect your contribution to be celebrated.

As a founder member of the employers forum for work-life balance, we give all staff the chance to apply for flexible working hours.

There’s a lot to look forward to

    • Annual pay reviews
    • Paid holidays
    • Pension

We operate a flexible retirement policy. This means you can choose to retire at any age between 55 and 75. Provided you are over 16 and under 75, you automatically become a member of the Nationwide Group Personal Pension arrangement when you join. Eligible employees contribute 4% of their salary and we also contribute 4%. After 2 years’ employment, our contribution increases to 8%, and if you decide to pay additional contributions we will match this to a maximum of 3%.
    • An annual bonus

We aim to give everyone an annual bonus depending on how successful the year has been. It's our way of giving you a share of the profits you've helped to bring in for the business.
    • Additional bonuses

Many income-generating areas of the business award bonuses or operate incentive schemes to reward individual contributions. And for the past six years we’ve given everyone a Christmas bonus in the form of vouchers.
    • Recognition awards

For extra-special contributions we often reward our people with personal gifts and vouchers.
    • Car

Depending on your role, you may be eligible to receive a company car, or if you are at Senior Executive Level enter into the Nationwide Car Ownership Scheme (COS). A cash alternative is available for drivers who are at Status or Senior Executive levels.
    • Free or subsidised healthcare plan

      For you and your family.
    • Free life insurance

Worth four times your salary and payable in the event of your death.
    • A tailored benefits scheme

We have a lot of respect for the individual, and we appreciate that everyone has different needs. That's why we offer you the chance to personally tailor your benefits through our 'youchoose' scheme. Recognised as one of the best in the UK, it allows you to choose from a wide range of options (some of which are income tax and NIC efficient) which include:
      • A number of healthcare options.
      • The option to buy or sell up to a week's holiday.
      • The chance to make additional pension contributions.
      • Discounted RAC membership.
      • Corporate clothing
      • Discounted childcare vouchers.
      • Discounted retail shopping vouchers.
      • Bikes4Work scheme.

Last year we invested over £8 million in a wide range of health and well-being services - and gained a Business in the Community 'Healthy Workplace' Award.

We're looking into more flexible choices all the time, so you can expect your benefits to develop along with your career.

    Health support schemes

    – we offer a free confidential health advice line and counselling service to all our people.

    Flexible working

    – there's a whole range of options open to you, including part-time work, job share, shift working, annualised hours, term-time work, home-working and flexi-time. If the role allows, we'll do whatever we can to help you find the right hours for you. More than a third of our staff work flexibly – which is around 12% higher than the industry benchmark of 27%.

    Short and long-term leave

    – we'll also try to accommodate any leave you need to take, planned or not. This includes bereavement or domestic leave, of course. But we also respect your needs when it comes to religious observation, jury service, public duties, fertility treatment, unpaid leave, maternity, paternity, adoption, parental leave, carers’ leave, employment breaks and extended holiday leave.

    Training and development

However you want to learn and grow in your career, we have an option to suit. We spent more than £500 per full-time employee last year on training, and we're constantly investing more. Find out about the different ways we develop our people.

    Brainwaves

Our employee suggestion scheme encourages everyone at Nationwide to put forward ideas on how to improve the business. We now get up to 400 suggestions a month and if we use an idea, the person who has forwarded it receives 10% of the cost savings or income generated (up to £10,000) in the first 12 months of it being implemented.

    Office restaurants and rest areas

We subsidise staff catering and refreshments by more than £1,500,000 every year. That means discounted meals, drinks or both, depending where you work.

    Sports facilities

Subsidised gyms in our head office locations can cost as little as £16 per month, including some classes.

    Employee discounts site

Packed full of discounted products and services, many negotiated exclusively for Nationwide employees.
